A .297-230 CADET TRAINING RIFLE, MODEL 'VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT CONTRACT', serial no 79,
possibly a date, with 27 1/2in. blued barrel signed 'BARREL MADE BY THE BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. LD. BIRMINGHAM', block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, plain slab-sided receiver, the left side marked 'VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT' in an arch over a Queen's crown and above '79', the rear of receiver with a roundel marked 'FRANCOTTE'S PATENT', the right side stamped with facing 'broad arrow' marks separated by the letter 'S', polished dropping feed-ramp with cocking indicator, walnut butt-stock amateurly initialled 'S.B', iron heel-plate, full-length fore-end fixed with two barrel-bands and provision for clearing rod (absent), the whole an older refinish (some bruising to outside of breech)
